Or you can use an icepick, pickaxe, shovel or garden hoe to make a garden plot, then again to prepare each slot then add fertilizer if you have it to make things faster , plant seeds from those packets you probably ignore, then use a container of water to water each one.

After minutes you'll have plants to harvest, one plot of 9 plants being more food than you'll be able to eat in one sitting, often enough to fully feed two people even three.

Also, never underestimate the power of a portable stove. With even the large gas can it takes only one inventory space, and all you need to cook with it is a frying pan or cooing pot, both of which you can carry in a 2x2 space with 2x2 storage in them.
